Headline Search Feature

To search for news stories that contain a single keyword, enter a forward slash (/) followed by the keyword and press b. For example, to view all headlines containing the word China, you would enter the following query:

/China b

The news database for has been revised to support indexing of stories by the keywords in each story's headline; users may select stories for review based on searches of those indexed keywords.

Stories are also indexed by one or more of the data vendors news categories as well as by one or more super-categories; super-categories are constructed to reflect general characteristics of stories, independent of their specific content categories.

Because of the significant changes to the database's organization, existing news stories will be deleted upon upgrading to v3.01a.

News databases are maintained on servers and standalone systems, but not on workstations. Workstation users access a server's news database via news windows and a powerful set of selection and query commands. The same set of news window commands is also available to standalone users.

A user on a workstation (or standalone system) can select an index list drawn from any of the defined news categories. The contents of the index list can be further refined by searching for story headlines containing one or more keywords or keyword fragments. Search keywords can be combined in various ways to form complex queries through the use of special query operators and parentheses.

Once a category selection and/or search query has been processed, the news window's index list will be updated with any newly-arrived story that meets the current category and search criteria for that window. A news window's selected category and current search query (if any) are always saved with the window when the window (or the page to which it belongs) is saved.

The following major sections will give detailed information about the underlying concepts and methods of using the headline search feature.
